Nick Murby is a British business executive and magnetic shielding specialist with more than 35 years of experience in the design, manufacture, and commercialisation of high-performance magnetic shielding systems. He is the CEO of Magnetic Shields USA, the North American subsidiary of Magnetic Shields USA, a manufacturer of precision magnetic shielding solutions for scientific, medical, quantum, aerospace, and industrial applications.

Having entered the magnetic shielding industry in the late 1980s, Nick has developed extensive expertise in ultra-low-frequency magnetic shielding, high-permeability alloys, magnetically shielded rooms (MSRs), active field compensation systems, and precision magnetic measurement environments. Throughout his career, he has worked at the intersection of advanced engineering and scientific research, helping to develop shielding solutions for some of the world’s most demanding applications.

Nick has contributed to the development of large-scale ultra-low-field environments requiring exceptional magnetic attenuation, field stability, and gradient control. His work ranges from compact precision shielding assemblies and cryogenic shields through to complete magnetically shielded rooms for biomagnetic research, quantum technology, and fundamental physics experiments.

Under his leadership, Magnetic Shields USA has expanded the company’s North American operations, supplying custom magnetic shielding systems, zero-gauss chambers, active compensation systems, and MuRoom® magnetically shielded rooms to universities, national laboratories, medical researchers, and advanced technology companies throughout the United States and Canada.

Combining deep technical knowledge with commercial leadership, Nick has built a reputation for translating complex scientific requirements into practical engineering solutions, helping researchers and technology developers operate at the limits of magnetic measurement and control. His career has spanned projects ranging from fundamental physics experiments and quantum technologies to aerospace systems and next-generation biomagnetic research, establishing him as a recognised figure within the international magnetic shielding community.

  • Co-author of the 2022 peer-reviewed Scientific Reports publication, A Lightweight Magnetically Shielded Room with Active Shielding which presented a new generation of actively compensated lightweight MSR technology for wearable OPM-MEG and ultra-sensitive magnetic measurement applications.
